Kevin McCarthy said Democrats Wednesday wanted to control the information Americans can access with Joe Biden’s new Disinformation Governance Board.

“Don’t they trust the Americans enough that they want to control so much of our lives?” asked the Speaker of the Republican House of Representatives during a news conference on the new Homeland Security Board.

“We watched it over and over again,” McCarthy continued. “Why would they want to control the information? Because they don’t want you to know the truth.”

He claimed that the Democrats are trying to hide information disseminated by the right that the left thinks everything is likely conspiracies. According to McCarthy, that includes distraction from record-high inflation and the facts surrounding COVID-19.

Republicans immediately denounced the new body, headed by so-called Russian misinformation expert Nina Jankowicz, as the dystopian “Ministry of Truth” from George Orwell’s novel 1984.

“The President’s Department of Truth is an un-American abuse of power,” McCarthy said during a news conference with fellow GOP lawmakers, including pro-MAGA representatives Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Jim Jordan of Ohio.

Boebert said at the Capitol press conference Wednesday, “Make no mistake, freedom of speech is under attack here in America.”

“The Biden regime constantly employs tactics to silence dissenting voices,” she added.

McCarthy said further evidence of Biden and Democrats’ nefarious reasons for the disinformation panel is who was chosen to chair it.

Jankowicz has been slammed by Republicans for a series of earlier comments that clearly show her bias against Donald Trump and her now-debunked claims about ties between the former president’s campaign and Russia.

“She actively promoted false information,” McCarthy said of Jankowicz, claiming her new “role” was to “monitor information” and decide what Americans should believe to be true.

Some recent examples show Jankowicz’s opposition to perspectives shared by right-wing voices and media.

During an interview with the Associated Press in October 2020 — just a month before the presidential election — Jankowciz dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop scandal as a “Trump campaign product.”

She also suggested last month that she opposes The First Amendment because she thinks it’s bad for “marginalized communities” on social media, and called Elon Musk a “free speech absolutist” for being more open to Twitter want to do all the votes.

Speaking to NPR, Jankowicz questioned Musk’s purchase of the platform.

“I shudder to think if free speech absolutists took over more platforms, what that would look like for the marginalized communities,” she said, claiming those groups “already shoulder … disproportionate amounts of this abuse.”

McCarthy insisted on Wednesday: “President Biden’s Disinformation Governance Board must be completely dismantled. ‘

“They want to create a ministry of disinformation that can go in and dictate what they believe to be true and what they don’t,” he said of Biden and the Democrats.

Timeline of claims made by Nina Jankowicz, head of Joe Biden’s Disinformation Governance Board

June 2016 – Shared a link to a now-deleted Medium post showing a mural of Donald Trump kissing Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Putin’s Russia is not a country that any American voter would emulate. The United States should not elect a demagogue who intends to do just that,” she wrote at the time.

July 2016 – Jankowicz linked to a Foer article titled “Putin’s Puppet” and tweeted: “But do we want a President who has so many shady and cozy ties to Russia? no So yes, this piece is a must.’

August 2016 – “Manafort is not Trump’s only connection to #Russia and #Putin,” she tweeted, while sharing a statement from DNC national press secretary Mark Paustenbach, in which he claimed, “Trump’s campaign still maintains strong ties to Russia and pro-Kremlin elements.”

– She also shared a link to a Clinton campaign article with the comment, “Trump’s bizarre relationship with Russia… foreign policy matters.”

September 2016 – “Trump’s relations with the Kremlin do not end in Manafort. These are serious people,” she warned in a tweet.

November 1, 2016 – ‘Husband texted me ‘You have news to wake up to.’ Never thought it would be this. Confirms our worst fears about Trump. I’m appalled, Jankowicz tweeted. Came in response to a Hillary Clinton campaign tweet that claimed Trump had a “secret server” that he was using to “privately communicate with a Putin-linked Russian bank called Alfa Bank.”

November 6, 2016 – Jankowicz said that “what started months ago with me joking about Donald Trump’s ‘bromance’ with Putin has actually become an existential threat to our country”.

– She said that after Trump’s defeat, “we never have to talk about him again (until Putin grants him Russian citizenship)”

December 2016 – Called Trump “Pinocchio” in response to an official letter from Biden: “It’s not at all far-fetched to ask if Trump is in fact the ‘puppet’ that Secretary Clinton derisively called him.”

March 2017 – Months after Trump took office, Jankowicz tweeted “sermon” in response to a screenshot from a Washington Post article titled “The Clinton campaign warned you about Russia.” But nobody was listening,’ written by Jennifer Palmieri, Clinton campaign communications director.

– Former Russian Ambassador Michael McFaul tweeted that Rep. Adam Schiff “makes a great statement” after including discredited allegations from the Steele dossier in the Congressional Record. Jankowicz tweeted in response, “Agree, and more importantly – explains why examining Trump-Russia relations is an essential part of our democracy.”

June 2020 Jankowicz directly quoted Steele Dossier’s claims in her book How to Lose the Information War: Russia, Fake News, and the Future of Conflict

October 15, 2020 – Jankowicz told the Associated Press there were questions as to whether the infamous laptop belonged to Hunter Biden.

“We should look at it as a product of the Trump campaign,” Jankowicz said at the time of the interview, noting the involvement of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Trump aide Steve Bannon.
