It’s time to make babies! The new Apple Watch has an ovulation feature that tells the wearer the best time to conceive

Smart watches have long since passed the point of just telling the time, and offer a bewildering array of health features, from step counts to electrocardiograms.

But Apple’s latest device will now also tell users the best time to conceive.

The tech giant revealed last night that its new Apple Watch 8 will make family planning “easy and convenient” with an ovulation feature. The watch – which will cost from £419 – uses two sensors to check women’s wrist temperatures every five seconds overnight and record basal body temperature – the lowest level reached during rest.

Slight increases of just 0.1 degrees can be a sign of ovulation. Experts believe that tracking this data daily can help predict when a woman is most likely to become pregnant. The most fertile times are the days just before ovulation, the day of ovulation and the day after.

Sumbul Desai, Apple’s chief health officer, said at last night’s launch event, “If you’re trying to conceive, knowing if and when you’ve ovulated can inform your family planning with your healthcare provider.”

Temperature tracking will also help women track their periods more accurately, with users receiving a notification if their logged cycle changes, which can be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

Apple said: “The menstrual cycle is an important indicator of health and many doctors consider it a sign of life. Apple Watch Series 8 comes with innovative new temperature-reading capabilities that give women more insight.’

The new watch will be available from September 16th.

Silicon Valley has been deep into repopulating the planet lately, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk – a father of 10 – saying falling birth rates are the greatest threat facing humanity.

However, critics have pointed out that the more people there are, the more potential customers the tech companies can target.
