Breaking the ice on a dating app is hard. Like, really hard.
Sometimes a match’s profile reveals literally nothing except for a few photos of them that look vaguely thoughtful and beguiling. Then there are times when you struggle to write a witty but charming opening line, only to meet silence at the other end.
Hinge is adding a few new features to give data more conversation starters. Dates can now add polls to their profiles in addition to video prompts.
Hinge users will likely already be familiar with the recently added profile voice prompts, which give daters a chance to hear someone’s voice before deciding whether to chat more. Of course, this also provides ample opportunity to get the Ick.
“Beige flags” is the TikTok dating trend that could ruin your love life
According to research from Hinge, 50 percent of daters feel bored when they receive a one-word opener from a potential date. Let’s face it, we’ve all rolled our eyes when we receive a simple “Hey” message. There is … boring!
Poll prompts allow Hinge users to poll their matches on topics like “A dream home must contain” and “Instead of getting drinks, let’s…” giving daters the opportunity to choose their first date. The polls allow you to create your own multiple choice options, allowing you to show more of this beautiful personality.

Then there’s the new video prompt feature. According to Hinge research, more than half of users would like to see unedited video of a potential match.

The new feature allows users to post 30 second videos on their profile in response to prompts such as “Hello from me and my pet”, “Can we talk about this”, “I’m a 10 but” just to name a few, record, tape.
How does it work?
How do you use these two new features?
For instant polls, just go to your settings and click Edit Profile. Under the new Ask a Poll section, tap Create Poll. Select a prompt, then fill out three response options. Then tap Done and your prompt should appear under your first picture on your profile.

For video prompts, go to your settings and click “Edit Profile”. Now choose a video prompt like “Something I care about most” and then record your response. You have to press the record button to get started, and you can record for a maximum of 30 seconds. You can preview it before it goes live to make sure you’re happy with it – just hit the play button. When you’re ready to make it live, tap Done and it will appear under the first picture on your profile.
Then all the data has to do is start formulating their responses. And no, “hey” won’t cut it.
