Globetrotting mum's viral TikTok video reveals one-step pack and unpack travel hack

In a viral TikTok video, Lora McLaughlin Peterson, who travels the world with her family, revealed a handy hack to save time unpacking clothes — using a closet divider to keep them organized

One (very) well-travelled mum shared a handy trick to saving time packing and unpacking—stash vacation outfits in a closet divider.

Lora McLaughlin Peterson shared the “One-Step Pack and Unpack Travel Hack” in a viral TikTok video, showing how she fills a closet divider with folded clothes and folds it into her carry-on suitcase. When she arrives at her destination, she simply takes out the divider and hangs it up.

The 52-year-old former CBS news correspondent, who lives in Los Angeles, tells MailOnline Travel that she shot the video while traveling to New York – a place she often visits with her family.

Mum-of-three Lora explains she got the idea when her eldest daughter brought home a “shelfpack” suitcase — “it’s basically a suitcase with a built-in pop-up shelf for your clothes.”

Lora, who has garnered a following on social media as a “hack expert,” says, “My way is the much more affordable option that doesn’t leave you tied to permanent shelves in your luggage. You use it when you need it.’

In the video, which has now racked up 120,000 views on TikTok, Lora explains that she puts an outfit on a different shelf of the closet divider for each day of the week. “When you get to your destination, pull it out and hang it,” she says to the camera.

Travelers won’t lose space in their suitcases, according to Lora, who says, “I can put a lot in there: jeans, pyjamas, underwear, socks, sweaters, anything that can be folded.”

She has since used it when packing for trips to London and the Bahamas.

How were the reactions to TikTok? “Overwhelmingly positive,” reveals Lora, who has amassed 177,000 TikTok followers so far.

She notes that a closet divider “is one of those things we all have access to, and it’s budget-friendly.”

“It works with any suitcase because you can buy the size that fits the luggage you already have,” she says.

However, the hack does have a downside, Lora admits, saying, “If you don’t have a lot of folded items, this can be tricky.”

Packing aside, Lora — who has also previously worked as a reporter for CNN, Court TV, and KABC — has another nifty travel tip up her sleeve. She says: “My best advice to anyone in the world is to turn left.

“Since most of the world’s people are right-handed, people tend to prefer the lines on the right, whether it’s airport security, an escalator, a grocery store line or a museum, always follow left, it usually pays off.’

‘[It] works wonders at Disneyland,” she adds.
