Footage shows the moment Melbourne Royal Show rollercoaster victim was hit

A harrowing video of the moment a young woman was hit by a roller coaster and left with horrific injuries has been shared online after days of abuse.

Shylah Rodden, 26, remains in intensive care after being hit by the Rebel Coaster at the Melbourne Royal Show on Sunday.

Shocking footage of the incident shows Ms Rodden being hit by the roller coaster and being dragged nine meters up at the start of a loop.

Daily Mail Australia has decided not to release all of the footage out of respect for the young victim and her family.

The ride opened just days later, on Tuesday, in a move Ms Rodden’s family has called “shameful”.

Police claim Ms Rodden went onto the tracks of the high-speed train to retrieve a mobile phone.

Her devastated sister Caisha Rodden told Daily Mail Australia her family is still in the dark about the extent of Ms Rodden’s injuries.

“We don’t know (the) possibilities and opportunities at this stage,” she said.

Show spokeswoman Katie Scanlan said WorkSafe had declared the ride safe after an inspection and could reopen from Tuesday.

“The safety and wellbeing of our show attendees remain our top priority,” she said in a statement.

“Strict safety protocols are followed in line with Victorian WorkSafe regulations. All on-site rides have undergone rigorous compliance testing and passed all required safety documentation.’

Show management declined to comment on whether new safety procedures were put in place following Ms Rodden’s accident.

The Melbourne Royal Show will remain open through Sunday.

In news of the ride reopening, Ms Rodden was subjected to even more online abuse.

“You can’t blame anyone else but the woman who was hurt. It was her decision to try and retrieve it while the ride was still going,” one person wrote.

“And so it was supposed to be reopened, why even try to get your phone when the coaster was in operation? Stupid mistake of the girl,” wrote another woman.

Caisha said the rumors circulating online are causing even greater pain to her family, who are already dealing with the tragedy.

“Definitely misinformation regarding the accident which is really sad and causes even more heartache to our family,” she said.

“Shylah is in critical condition and we won’t know more until later today as we discuss with police and provide some eyewitness accounts.”

Her father, Alan Rodden, said it’s still a mystery how Shylah was hit.

“There are many stories going around and I don’t know which one is true and if someone is covering their tracks,” he said.

Police announced on Monday that the roller coaster was traveling at 45 mph when Ms Rodden was struck.

Horrified families watched as paramedics treated their severe facial injuries at the scene before they were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Mr Rodden said his daughter suffered life-changing injuries.

“Obviously I can’t talk to my daughter. She’ll be in a coma for a while,’ he said.

“The injuries are terrible. Dreadful. She is brain damaged. The pelvis, the arms, the legs, the back, the neck – there is hardly anything that is not broken. I just can’t understand how the hell so much damage was done.

“Even the doctors said they hadn’t seen anything this bad in a long time.”

Caisha said her sister was working at the Melbourne Royal Show at the time of the crash.

‘Shylah actually worked there. She was helping out her friend at her stall that day and she was sent on her break with another worker and they decided to take a few trips to kill time and unfortunately that happened,” she said.

The ride was quickly shut down after Ms Rodden was hit, leaving passengers stranded at the front for several hours.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the police.
