A dad is being praised by other parents after he shared his brilliant trick of getting his son to smile naturally in photos – and all it takes is yelling the word ‘poop’.
Children’s author Adam Perry, 37, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, accepted Twitter on September 14 to share two side-by-side photos of his preschool-age son posing for the camera on his first day of school.
“My son, when I tell him to smile or when I say ‘Poop!’ scream,” he tweeted.

Perry’s son looks adorable in both snaps, but his smile is a bit strained in the first one. In the second, he has a more natural, open-mouthed grin, and it’s all because his dad made him laugh.
The author’s post has gone viral, garnering nearly 300,000 likes in a week. Fans have used the comments to applaud him for the tech, which a number of parents have found helpful.
“You’ve mastered parenting,” one person wrote, while another joked, “Ha! You should be a school photographer.”

“My son has the funniest smile when he’s trying too hard,” the father told GMA. “Eventually I learned that if I just yelled ‘POOP’ and snapped the picture, it worked a lot better.”
“So that’s the secret to a good picture,” added another.
Others were inspired to share how they make their own children smile for pictures, and some even included photos.
Speaking about the viral post in an interview with Good Morning America, Perry said they always take pictures on the first day of school.
However, that day they were in a hurry and found it difficult to get a good shot.

“My son always has the funniest smile when he’s trying too hard,” he explained. “Eventually I learned that it always works much better if I just yell ‘POOP’ and take a quick picture.
“In this case it was quite a dramatic comparison so I thought I’d share it,” he added.
Perry’s post has since gone viral on Reddit, Instagram, and Facebook. He admitted he just “expected five to ten people to like it” — and off we went.
“This post must have really resonated with people, and I’ve had tons of messages from people using this trick and getting amazing pictures of their kids, which for me is the best part of all of this,” he told GMA.
