Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has slammed Mason Mount and insisted the midfielder “disappeared” in his defeat by Dinamo Zagreb.

The Blues’ Champions League season got off to the worst possible start on Tuesday when Mislav Orsic’s first-half goal condemned Thomas Tuchel’s side to defeat in Croatia.

England midfielder Mount has been one of many Chelsea players at Zagreb and has yet to contribute a goal or assist in seven Blues games in 2022-23.

And speaking to ESPN after the defeat, Leboeuf praised his performance and said he wasn’t involved enough in Chelsea’s game before putting on an “appalling” performance against a “very average” side.

“I want to talk about Mason Mount. We never talk about this guy because he’s Chelsea’s little boy,” said the 54-year-old.

“But I’m sorry, he’s gone. I want to know where the guy is. He’s a fantastic player, he’s got all the talent, but his commitment to the team isn’t enough, like everyone else.

“It was an appalling performance against a very average side.”

Mount agreed BT sport after Chelsea’s defeat and admitted that every member of Tuchel’s squad needs to look after themselves.

“We have to be brutally honest with ourselves, it’s not good enough,” he said. “It’s the first game of the Champions League and we need to get off to a good start.

“We started the game well but we let it slip away and that’s happened in the last couple of games and we have to look at that. It’s disappointing.

‘[There was a] unfocused, too easy to give away the goal and they make it 1-0. At our level it’s very difficult to get back into the game when you’re down 1-0, especially in the Champions League.

“Away from home we have to deal with it better. It’s tough. We start well, when we score the first goal the game is very different and we feel like we’re dominating.

“It’s not good enough, we are Chelsea. We need to raise our standards, every single player needs to look at themselves and do that.

“We’ve got to come back in the next game with that fire, that desire that we’ve shown over the last few years that we can win games and the performances that we know we can provide.”

The Blues were an impressive defensive unit early in Tuchel’s tenure but have kept just one clean sheet in seven games this season.

They have only scored eight goals this season and Mount admits it has taken a toll on confidence.

“Of course, when you’re going through a difficult time, confidence isn’t at its highest,” added Mount.

“We know we have to keep working hard and pull through as a team.”
