  • The Spaniard played a jump behind his back en route to the victory point

Carlos Alcaraz sent social media into a tailspin on Wednesday night when he hit one of the all-time best shots during his quarterfinal match at the US Open.

Widely regarded as the best young player on the ATP Tour, the young Spaniard had Arthur Ashe on his feet as he put on an incredible behind-the-back performance in his match with Jannik Sinner.

His Italian opponent had flicked the ball back to him with a shot that seemed to win the point, before a bouncing Alcarez defied the odds – and gravity – and returned the ball with a twisted backhand.

On another note, the US Open official report then summed up the sentiments of many by tweeting: “If this match is the future of men’s tennis, then a great era is upon us.”

Sinner is also just 21 and the pair will face off for many years to come as the era of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic draws to a close.

The pair faced off in the US Open quarterfinals for a place in the last four and a matchup with the last standing American, Frances Tiafoe.

At the start of Wednesday night’s game, Alcaraz was the highest-seeded player in men’s singles after Daniil Medvedev and compatriot Rafael Nadal were both eliminated earlier in the tournament.
