Sunshine Coast Crime Group Acting Inspector Philip Hurst said Thursday the man was stabbed to death after a “physical altercation” at a rental property just before midnight on Wednesday.
Sergeant Hurst said the man was an associate of the teen’s mother, but the boy was not his stepson.
“The exact nature of this relationship is something we’re exploring,” he said.
The boy’s mother was home at the time of the incident, police confirmed.
Neighbors were reportedly shocked to hear the incident happened on a quiet family street. A local told Sunshine Coast Daily she heard “screaming and screaming” between a man and a woman.
Chris Tindall, who lives on Toyne Street, said it was “pretty wild” that the stabbing took place on his street.

Another neighbor said the residents had been renting for less than six months and were “keeping to themselves”.
“There’s been a lot of tenants coming and going in this apartment lately,” the neighbor said.
Queensland Police said they have yet to speak to everyone involved but have reassured the public there is no ongoing threat to the community.
